Demo-based Cost Model

Authors:

Marco Arede, Carlos Mendes and Miguel Mira da Silva

Abstract: The complexity of organizations has become difficult to manage and organizations have lost the traceability between their essential transactions and the respective implementation costs. Most organizations do not have a coherent, comprehensive and consistent vision of the costs directly or indirectly related to the organization essential operations. This essential operations are based on networks of subjects that interact in order to coordinate and perform work, contributing for global performance. The lack of understanding of where costs occur leads to difficulties when taking decisions, limiting what can be achieved in a planned way, reason for the need of a properly cost analyses. A solution could contribute to a better understanding of where costs occur, providing managers with more information to support their decisions, so they can improve organizations in order to be more profitable. In our research we propose a DEMO-based Cost Model to address this problem, which intends to reduce the complexity of analysing costs, mapping the implementation costs with the essence of organizations. Our proposal allows analysing costs from different perspectives, by act, actor role, transaction and business process. The demonstration was applied to Invoice Management of a research and development unit. This research was conducted using DSRM.

DEMO Engine

Authors:

Pedro Matos de Carvalho, Carlos Mendes and Miguel Mira da Silva

Abstract: The service sector is the biggest of the world economy. It leads the creation of value in organizations. However, the service sector presents quality gaps that reduce customers' satisfaction and revenues. The fourth gap of service quality states that there is a difference between the service delivered and the communication acts involved in that delivery. In this research we proposed an approach based on Enterprise Ontology (EO) theory to mitigate this gap. Our proposal also includes the development of a software system, based on Design & Engineering Methodology for Organizations (DEMO) and Service Level Agreements (SLA), the DEMO Engine. This research was conducted using the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM). The demonstration of our proposal is done using an artificial example of a use of the DEMO Engine in a Travel Agency. The evaluation was made with feedback collected from 47 academic and by using the 4 Österle principles.

Implementing Organizational Self Awareness - A Semantic Mediawiki based Enterprise Ontology Management Approach

Authors:

David Aveiro and Duarte Pinto

Abstract: In this paper we present a solution currently being developed to enable collaborative enterprise ontology model management using the Semantic MediaWiki as a base tool. This solution is solidly grounded on the theoretical foundations of Organizational Self-Awareness and φ-theory of enterprise ontology and is a valuable contribution to facilitate general and distributed enterprise model management and also concrete and abstract syntax specification, i.e., the specification of a language's meta-model. This allows flexibility and ease of use in creation and adaptation of organizational models and also the use of semantic queries as to detect and inform users on any violation of meta-model rules.
